If you’re sleeping, yet wide awake, how do you differentiate between fiction and fantasy? I was only a child when something malignant began to haunt me in my sleep. It’d been a long time since I’d had such terrifying nightmares. Truth be told I did my best to forget them.

I didn’t think they were relevant in determining where me or my sister had come from. I had been taught they were nothing more than an overactive imagination and left it at that.

Demonio destroyed all of my preconceived notions.

We were berated for believing our demons were real when something worse existed.

A fable became reality and destroyed the illusion of a life I had created. Those things in the woods brought back suppressed traumas and forced me to face a past that was full of so many holes I could almost see right through it.

Recently I’d been spending a lot of time trying to remember what was missing. It was hard to fill in all the gaps or establish a timeline of events when half my memories felt as if they’d been factory reset.

I remembered the way we pretended to follow the faith of our children’s home and how painful some of the punishments were. I could recall some of the dreams too.

There was always this overwhelming feeling of being paralyzed and helpless as something stalked me from the shadows.

And blood.

There was always so much blood on my hands.

Trix suffered from the same afflictions.

We’d always had the same consensus—it was done on purpose. There was no other explanation as to why we both lost every memory of our lives before the age of ten. More frustrating was that the ones with the answers had seemingly vanished from the face of the earth or refused to speak about it.

That left us to do what we had been doing our whole lives, figuring it out on our own. The truth was deeply submerged in murky waters that cautioned against being explored. Given my current state of mind and everything that had transpired, I was ready to throw that caution both middle fingers and dive in headfirst.

Whatever reason there was for Demonio to be linked to us, I would find out. There was a slight chance that I was grasping at straws in my desperate attempt to fill all the cracks in our lives, but I was trusting my intuition on this one.

Going there had triggered a series of events that couldn’t be explained otherwise. We survived when we could’ve easily died. I was grateful to be alive, but I wanted to know why.

This situation left me perplexed and bereft. I think I might have been slowly going insane. At the very least I should’ve been wasting away.

The act of eating had become as burdensome as everything else. Forcing food down my throat was done just to keep myself going. I didn’t know if this was a side-effect
